Because of a calling to preach God's Word, I have given my life to the preparation and delivery of sermons. I have studied the sermons of noted preachers throughout history.
A few years ago, I tackled Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Matt.5-7). When I did begin to work with it, a disturbing thing happened. Instead of my studying the sermon, the sermon studied me. The preaching of Jesus jumped out of the pages of Matthew and rather than hearing Jesus address His disciples and the Pharisees of the first century, I heard Him speak to the pharisee in me!
Jesus is primarily teaching His loyal followers, citizens of the Kingdom who, in a sense, are destined to live in exile until their King returns to set up His Kingdom on the earth.
It is His instruction about the character (heart), influence, conduct, worship, ambition, relationships and commitment that set them apart in a foreign and hostile environment as they anticipate His glorious return.
